Senator Asha Seth had an opportunity, in the last week of September, to reinforce confidence in the special partnership between Canada and China at the 64th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China hosted by Consul-General Fang Li and his wife Gao Lijuan. The event commemorated the remarkable achievements of the Chinese nation since the founding of the People’s Republic of China and looked towards strengthening the cultural, academic, and economic ties between Canada and China. Parliamentarians in attendance included Senators Salma Ataullahjan and Victor Oh alongside Members Brad Butt, Bob Dechert, Chungsen Leung, and Costas Menegakis.

“Our government is engaged and committed to building bilateral ties that will increase prosperity for Canadian and Chinese citizens,” remarked Senator Asha Seth as she thanked the Chinese community of Toronto for their many contributions to the vibrancy of the country.

Chinese-Canadian Senator, Victor Oh, presented the official Prime Ministerial greetings in which the importance of the Canada-China relationship was highlighted.

“This special occasion offers a chance to celebrate the vibrant and wide-ranging relationship between Canada and China. Indeed, we are rapidly increasing two-way trade and our countries cooperate closely on investment, scientific and regional security issues. In addition, our people-to-people ties are strengthened by a significant exchange of tourists and students and by Canada’s dynamic and hard-working Chinese community,” stated Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

“Deepening our partnerships in the rapidly expanding Chinese market is a key strategy for growth and job creation,” concluded Senator Seth.
