Soldiers’ Danger Pay Cut, Reversal Criticised as Mismanagement

The federal government is reducing danger pay for Canadian military personnel who are currently serving in Afghanistan on training missions, saying that the country is not as dangerous as it used to be, according to CBC's French-language sister broadcaster on April 9.

This was followed on April 10 when the Prime Minister's Office said it intends to reverse a cut in danger pay for Canadian Forces personnel serving in Afghanistan, though it later clarified its statements to say it had asked officials to "re-examine" the move.

The world is taking note of the ruling Conservatives’ shameful betrayal of Canada’s once admirable reputation as a fair country, sincerely working on the world stage to improve the lot of the disadvantaged and suffering. In the UN Human Rights Council’s Universal Periodic Review, Canada was criticized to such an extent that the Council decided to send the Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, and representatives of the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women and the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, to investigate.

Ontario Increased Funding for Settlement Programs

Ontario is increasing support for settlement programs and helping more than 80,000 newcomers get the services they need to settle and find jobs.

Through the government’s Newcomer Settlement Program, 98 organizations across the province will receive support over the next two years to help connect new immigrants with language and job training, and other community services. This year’s investment will allow select agencies to explore new and innovative ways to deliver support to vulnerable immigrants and underserviced communities.

Bharat Masrani First Indian Appointed CEO of Top Bank

Bharat Masrani, who is in charge of Canada's top financial institution TD Trust's US personal and commercial banking operations, will take over as the CEO as of November 1, 2013. Masran is the first person of Indian-origin person to become CEO of Canada's top financial institution. Currently Sarabjit Marwah is the highest-ranking Indian in corporate Canada as the number two in Scotiabank in Toronto.
