A
Remarkable Success
BY SHOBHA NAIR
Miss
India-Canada Pageant gets more exciting and glamorous every year.
The 20th annual Miss India-Canada pageant had it all -
entertainment, prestige and glamour all rolled into one. With
a red carpet entrance, lining up to attend the dazzling cocktail
hour, one could see the glitter and jitter around.
Many anxious parents were grouped around friends and family
hoping for the best for their daughters in the competition.
The
opening host, Aashish Rajhans, introduced the emcees for the
evening—Karen Johnson from the Weather Network and Husein Madhavji.
Karen commenced the evening by introducing the distinguished
Panel of Judges: Rahul Bhardwaj, President-OM Financial; Reetu
Gupta, VP-Eastons Group of Companies; Susan Gordon, Vice President
of National/Regional Marketing and Marketing Services for Rogers;
Satish Sikha, Couture Fashion Designer; Neera Chopra, Chair-Friends
of South Asia at the Royal Ontario Museum; Melvyn L. Solmon, Partner
& Barrister-Solmon Rothbart Goodman LLP; and Dr. Milan Gupta,
Cardiologist and Co-Director Canadian Cardiovascular Research
Network. With
a stunning stage set provided by Dream Party Decor, patrons were
“Wowed” right from the very beginning. The 16 contestants began
the evening with a high-energy dance sequence that captivated the
audience and kept them in their seats for the remainder of the
evening. The
16 contestants introduced themselves to the judges and audience with
the MCs filling in the details about their achievements and
ambition. There
were 3 rounds where the contestants were judged for their Indian
wear, Western outfit and Talent.
Its a matter of pride that the talent showcased by all the
young ladies was astounding. Music,
dance and vocal talents were definitely captivating.
Something very different was when one of the contestant
showcased her talent of designing her own line of clothing
especially for the desi women ! The
judges were then put to the test as each contestant completed the
first three segments: Indian Dress, Evening Gown, and Talent. Next,
the emcees announced that Anokhi Dalvi of Mississauga, ON won the
ROGERS People’s Choice Award. Ms. Susan Gordon, Vice President of
National/Regional Marketing and Marketing Services for Rogers
presented Anokhi with a bouquet of flowers and a Sony Ericsson X10.
Maaza Jaan of Markham, ON won the Miss Photogenic and Raman Bassi of
Calgary, AB won Miss Photogenic. After
the first 3 rounds, the 16 contestants were shortlisted to 5. The
top 5 finalists were then announced in random order: Mehek Mehta of
Montreal, QC; Anchal Sharma of Richmond Hill, ON; Sarah Paul of
Pickering, ON; Anokhi Dalvi of Mississauga, ON; and Maaza Jaan of

asking each contestant a different question by the panel of judges. The

performance by illusionist Ray Chance. Patrons waited in complete
silence as Karen and Husein announced the results from the
accounting firm of Kunjar Sharma and Associates.
The Second Runner-up was Maaza Jaan, the First Runner-up was
Anokhi Dalvi. Anchal Sharma of Richmond Hill, Ontario won the well
deserved title of Miss India-Canada 2010. The
winner of the evening was unique as in performing kathak to a
western beat which was far removed from the kathak
"taal". Another contestant played a western classical on the keyboard
and blended in beautifully a slow bollywood number. Each year one gets to see incredible talents of these young
people which I am sure encourages the others to adapt to the culture
we live in and incorporate our heritage seamlessly. Anchal
Sharma is a 23 year old York University graduate entering the field
of teaching. She completed her undergraduate degree with Honours in
Kinesology & Health Science and went on to attain a Bachelor of
Education. Anchal would

the youth of tomorrow. "My aim to is to give back to the
community in some way shape or form. Seva (service) is a big part of
my life. I am a firm believer that when you help others, your
service is always reciprocated back to you down the line."
Blessed by being crowned Miss India-Canada 2010, Anchal would like
to explore various avenues to provide service and mentorship to the
youth and those less fortunate via charitable organizations, and
social awareness programs. Organizers,
Sanjay Agnihotri and Gautam Sharma were then called upon to say a
few words and present Bollywood superstar, Suniel Shetty with the
Special Achievement Award. After
the show, Mr. Sanjay Agnihotri remarked that this year’s winner
will also assist in promoting the goals of various social
organizations. When asked what he thought of this year’s event,
