Aanchal Dogra Crowned Miss India-Canada 2009

It was a night of entertainment, prestige and glamour all rolled up into one; the 19th annual MISS INDIA-CANADA Event had it all! The sold out show was proudly supported by Rogers, Movado, Om Financial, and India Tourism to name a few. The event was truly a memorable experience that those present will remember for years to come. At the end of the evening, Aanchal Dogra of Mississauga, Ontario won the esteemed title of Miss India-Canada 2009. Other sponsors included Payal Convention Centre, Bigen Speedy Hair Colour, Yak, and State Bank of India (Canada).

 

With a red carpet entrance, dazzling cocktail hour, and stunning stage set provided by Dream Party Decor, patrons were “Wowed” right from the very beginning. The 16 contestants began the evening with a high-energy dance sequence that captivated the audience and kept them in their seats for the remainder of the evening.

 

Organizers, Sanjay Agnihotri and Gautam Sharma were then called upon to say a few words and present rising Hollywood Actor, Karen David with the Special Achievement Award. Prior to receiving the award, Karen gave the audience a breathtaking performance of her new single Magic Carpet Ride.

 

Notable attendees were Arlene Dickinson, star of CBC’s Dragons’ Den; Hon. Preeti Saran - Consul General of India; Hon. Mr. Justice Michael H. Tulloch from the Superior Court of Justice, Ontario; and Hon. Mr. Justice Tim Lipson from the Ontario Court of Justice.

 

Soon after, the opening host, Aashish Rajhans, introduced the emcees for the evening—Karen Johnson from the Weather Network and Husein Madhavji.  Karen commenced the evening by introducing the distinguished Panel of Judges: Suby Bhardwaj, Barrister & Solicitor; Arlene Dickinson, CEO – Venture Communications, and Star of CBC's Dragons' Den; Susan Gordon, Vice President of National/Regional Marketing for Rogers Wireless; Aditya Jha, President & CEO – Karma Candy Inc, and Chairman – POA Educational Foundation; Bosco Mascarenhas, Case Management Coordinator Civil (Toronto Region) Superior Court of Justice – Ministry of the Attorney General; Sangita Patel, Weather Specialist – CityNews; and Dax Sukhraj, President & CEO – Keybase Financial.

The judges were then put to the test as each contestant completed the first three segments: Indian Dress, Evening Gown, and Talent. Next, the emcees announced that Allison Couch of Toronto , ON won the Rogers People’s Choice Award. Ms. Susan Gordon, Vice President of National/Regional Marketing for Rogers Wireless presented Allison with a bouquet of flowers and a HTC Dream with Built-in Google Apps.  Noorin Manji of Markham , ON won the Miss Congeniality Award and Komal Sharma of Pierrefonds , QC won Miss Photogenic.  

 

The top 5 finalists were then announced in random order: Antara Das of Scarborough, ON; Komal Sharma of Pierrefonds, QC; Reema Paul of Toronto, ON; Aanchal Dogra of Mississauga, ON; and Guneet Marwah of Maple, ON. The final segment of Question & Answer involved asking each contestant a different question by the panel of judges.

 

As the anticipation of the winner grew, the audience was treated to energetic performances by the Dance Group, Jadoo and violinist, Grenville Pinto.

 

Patrons waited in complete silence as Karen and Husein announced the results from the accounting firm of Kunjar Sharma and Associates.  The Second Runner-up was Guneet Marwah, the First Runner-up was Komal Sharma, and this year’s MISS INDIA-CANADA 2009 was Aanchal Dogra.

 

Aanchal Dogra is a 25-year old physiotherapist at a renowned Orthopedic Center . She has completed a dual specialization in Bachelors in Physical Therapy and M.D in Alternative Medicines. Moreover, she will shortly be pursuing Masters in Health Care Administration.  Aanchal wants to become an ambassador of peace, goodwill, harmony and compassion in order to do full justice to the Miss India-Canada organization’s motto “For beauty with a purpose”. With the Miss India-Canada title, Aanchal wants to forge ahead into fields yet to be explored by her:  Entrepreneurship, Social services, Health services, the Entertainment world and beyond…

 

After the show, Mr. Sanjay Agnihotri remarked that this year’s winner will also assist in promoting the goals of various social organizations. When asked what he thought of this year’s event, Mr. Agnihotri replied, “The hard work and dedication that our team and volunteers put forth into this year’s event has truly been remarkable. We are overwhelmed with the support we received from the community this year. The contestants have made this 19th annual event one that we will all remember!”
